I found this tribal necklace fascinating and I guess adornment feeds into our vanity.
We will always find something to adorn ourselves with, and check out how it looks in the mirror.
I'm sure vanity is as old as humanity - poet and don't know it.

This is a very early necklace I saw in a display case in the Polynesian and Micronesian section of the Adelaide museum.
Goes nicely with the bone through the nose.
Not a throw-away statement that. There were plenty of early photos of such adornment, right near the section of shrunken head displays.
Not kidding about that either.
Don't know the New Guinea dialect for "Oooooo - that turned out rather nicely!" as one admires one's headshrinking handiwork, but sure something similar must have been muttered more than a few times in the Highlands.
Or how about imagining a lovely 17th century New Guinea/Micronesion lass who "not only turned heads but shrunk them too".
A bit disconcerting visiting the museum sometimes.
Makes me think twice about using the term "my lips are sealed".

Dear old Museum! How it's changed since we were kids! Those heads were under negotiation once! Talks were held about whether they should be returned and we kept them.Guess it depends on who's they were.
This made me laugh out loud. A quirky post that seemed a perfect way to describe that necklace and the culture it represents.
Catching up with you after moving house - though, sadly, not into one of those gorgeous eco-houses. It is a little cottage though, and so cozy. I look forward to having regular internet there by the end of the week. My lips (cyberifically speaking) will NOT be sealed then. Ha.
Some part of me thinks adornment is a luxury, something that happens when a people is comfortable and stable enough to consider such leisure items. Yet, as far back as we have evidence of humanity, there are also beads, the old bones through the nose, the earrings, the necklaces, etc.
It somehow implies to me that adornment is actually essential to the human spirit.
Hmm not sure it's my cup of tea. I barely wear any jewellery these days save a pair of earrings. Lovely doodle though, you're very creative, wish I had a spark of it these days.
