There are various contraptions where I work to help the students manage various physical disabilities, though I guess this would be classed more as equipment.
What differentiates equipment and contraptions. Probably the curiousity factor. There's always a sense of puzzlement in "what's this contraption?".
What's the first thing that comes to mind for 'contraption' in your house? Mine would be the cat door. After initial reluctance to use it after fierce door swing back, it is now permanently open and the grand-cat's quality of life and freedom have escalated to the independence that felines love - with those lovely soft blinks of appreciation and offers of "I'll wash you too".
That funny little rough tongue on your hand or cheek. It's been a while since we owned a cat and I'd forgotten such lovely offers of gentle appreciation.

Contraptions: I guess they are complex gadgets and odd mechanical things. Whatever is in your photos fits that description to me. A cat door sounds like a good contraption if you are a cat. A cat is usually a good friend and hand washer.
I saw your moon phase gadget on your blog site. I'm always amazed that no matter where we are in the world we have the same moon.
Hi Pam ~
The first thing that came to my mind when I thought of contraptions was a box of old sewing machine attachments that came with one of my treadle sewing machines. Some of them are quite strange and not only do I not know what they do, I can't figure out how to attach them!
In another box I found of attachments, there was a sweet booklet which described what each of those attachments was for, but didn't tell how to attach them to the machine! Some are easy, but some aren't.
Obviously someone at one time thought they were worthwhile contraptions!
I don't have any contraptions, but I do have a drawer full of old computer bits and flexes of computers long gone, but sure why I'm keeping them cause I wouldn't even know how to make them useful. So maybe a modern day potential contraption in the making!
I like the word contraption. I am going to set out to use it more.
I think you are right with the curiosity is the thing. If we don't know what something is used for we are thinking it is a contraption but if it's old hat, machine.
I first thought of the car from Chitty chitty bang bang for some reason :)
Hi Pam, it's funny I find the word contraption to sound old, even a bit archaic. Not a word I hear used much anymore. I guess if I thought about it "contraption" would bring to mind some machinery that was difficult for me to figure out how to use.
you know ... that darn ol' contraption
thanks for stopping by much love, Susan & les Gang + handosme Prince ;-)
It was lovely to meet you as well. Eugene has talked of nothing else but your toe nails...
Liked this. My dad was a gadget man and I got the same bug.
