Daydreaming - one of my favourite activities. Once I brush off the guilt of "I should be doing something", I can talk myself into how necessary Vitamin D is for my over-fifty bones, and think about people and things and places I've loved. I think about my daughter's health issues a lot, and realize there's not much I can do. Fibromyalgia amongst quite a few complicated issues...she is so busy, but still took time to knit me this beautifully-coloured scarf, bless her...

so I sit and think in my little garden, catching a touch of the soft winter sun in a scarf knitted with love.

My own mother and I drove to the hills recently. I wanted to give her a warm day in the sun also, but it was really cold and overcast with heavy fog on the freeway. We perservered and found a lovely picnic spot...

There she is in the distance, bringing out the thermos of tea and the sandwiches and cake also lovingly made...I think I will put this bench forward in the Bench of The Week series posted by Barbara Martin, and begun by RuneE at Visual Norway.

Recent cold weather has me daydreaming about the Darwin trip I posted about a while ago. I stayed across the other side of the bay from the city and had to wait by this step-off point for the ferry to come to take me over to the city. I get vertigo. I hate heights. There is no handrail.

The walkway is open mesh with the sea directly underneath. Not my idea of fun. Makes me want to sit down and not get up.

Remember the Mad Mouse? When I was a teenager, I wanted to fling myself off the side of that ride! Anything, I thought, is better than this. I've been on the big loopy rollercoaster rides many years ago and somehow feel more in control than in a rattly little madmouse car that goes right to the edge before flinging the victim sharp left...

It was with a sense of excitment and trepidation that I saw the approaching ferry...

No-one else seemed perturbed -in Darwin it seems, relaxation is the key...

Approaching the city...

Yes, I'd say a relaxed agenda is high on the list of priorities here...

My friend and I survived the trauma of alighting and disembarking. He lived in Darwin once. His family live there. They are used to such things including every creepy-crawly imaginable. We returned back to Humpty Doo safe and sound...he being a non-vertigo person was very considerate - taking steep steps up a walkway seeing the ocean in between large gaps is not fun. A patient friend is good.

Another daydream adventure was backpacking with my husband when we were young. All over the world. We loved Florence, but it was Easter, and most attractions were closed, and trains packed. My reasons for thinking of this beautiful city was that, travelling only with our packs, we tended not to purchase many souveniers. However recently I had some rewarding charity-shop finds...

"Hand embroidery- Florence. Made in Italy". A textile person's dream.

Just beautiful...

And my other find? A rusty old birdcage- so in goes a small ceramic bird and a few plants to add to my daydreaming garden...

Looking cosy as the winter evening sets in...

Have a lovely weekend everybody. Hope you have time for a daydream or two.

Oh my goodness what a lovely adventure. The size of that tree and oh the colour of your ocean so different from ours - which is steel grey blue and dark and seemingly impenetrable.
Happy weekend to you as well !
Oh Pam, so many favorites or fear inducers of mine woven into one enchanting post. Daydreaming - it's a lifestyle with me; ferry boats are my most memorable parts of any journey that happened to also have a ferry in it; I never EVER go on rollercoasters; standing on glass or any kind of see-through floor is practically impossible; benches are favorite scenes - I will have to check on Barbara's series; and today I'm taking my camera to explore a favorite antique mall and the Goodwill store. Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my sister under the skin - Annie
wow what a lovely escape that was! I haven't had internet (and won't have at all when we get on the road) but currently at my folks who do have so I'm playing blog catch up - glad I came over to see what you were up to. A day spent daydreaming is a day well spent in my mind! From those daydreams come our own reality :-) And what a beautiful scarf your daughter made. I'm in the middle of knitting myself a shawl for the chilly evenings sat outside Elvis!!!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend x
I understand your fear of heights and no handrails perfectly, Pam. It is one of those moments to take several deep breaths. The benches were perfect.
Lovely photographs and a lovely post Pam - love that scarf - as you say lovingly knitted. Families give us such a warm feeling don't they?
There is a possibility that I'll got to Florence later this year.... I'm very excited about the opportunity.
xx
That photo with the water below, not good....
Awesome scarf! Looks so warm. Glad your daughter is keeping busy, sounds like she doesn't let the pain of any sickness stand in her way! She must be a very strong woman!
Love that you can spend time with your mum on the bench, good conversation, hot tea and a slice of cake! :)
I love the Hand embroidery, so delicate and intricate!
Wow, really enjoyed this post and the photos.
So many lovely things to see in this post. I well remember the Mad Mouse from childhood. Everyone seemed to think it was the scariest ride at the fair. Of course, I wasn't tempted by any of them, much preferring to spend my time in the animal tents petting cows and sheep. Rides always made me woozy. Except for the carousel, which I adored. No doubt due to the fact that I was allowed to ride a horse, allbeit a wooden one.
And daydreaming? I do it alll the time!!
How kind of you to share several dreamy escapes in one post! Winter there must not be the same as winter in Minnesota -- it still looks just lovely. And standing on that open grate above the water would make me sit right down as well, and look for something to hang on to. Lastly, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's health challenges. All three of my daughters have chronic health issues as well -- I think it's so difficult as a mother to see them struggle with such things, but it makes their accomplishments even sweeter victories, doesn't it?
There have been a flurry of articles published recently about the benefits of daydreaming; how that activity relaxes the brain and encourages the creation of new neural pathways. So see? You are doing a noble thing when you wear your beautiful purple scarf and daydream. Bravo!
this is a lovely post! you are certainly surrounded by ove.. was the cake delicious? I also get vertigo and when I walk over bridges, I just about have to crawl.. and as a teenager, I hate all those rides at the Easter Show or Luna Park, I would envision bolts coming loose and see myself flying of to god knows where, still strapped in that cage.
I collect those little bird cages from the cleanup campaigns! I put tea lights in them and hang them in trees in summer time.. stay well dear friend.. I will be back blogging very soon xoxo
This entire post is a rich tapestry of experience and color. For me, that last photo is The Fringe.
I seem to be making many lovely journeys to past places too...
And what a good daughter and mother you are, you deserve that purple scarf!
Beautiful pictures. Great thoughts
Kia ora Pam,
What a lovely post. One of the things the mountains have taught me is to never feel guilty about day dreaming or doing anything but what you are doing in that exact moment. All these moments you have shared are wonderful and precious. Bless you and Kia kaha.
Aroha,
Robb
Daydreaming and adventures....perfect!
How cold does it get there in the winter?
Do you get snow??
Thanks for the comments everyone! Yes Elenka we get snow in the state of Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales. It is extremely rare to get an icing-sugar type sprinkle of snow on our Mount Lofty here in South Australia, maybe a tiny whisper of white which creates great excitement, once every 15 or 16 years or so.The seasonal snow fields in Victoria and New South Wales are more dependable and fun!
Looks like the best kind of day possible. One to day dream about. :>)
The scarf . . . beautiful color, and how nice to be wrapped in your daughters love while you send loving thoughts to her.
Hi Pam,
Report from Maine, USA. 47 degrees F, 8:22 am. It's been raining for 3 days and very chilly...so, no, no more heat wave. It was a unexpected event.
Oh well....Enjoyed it for those 2 days...more than that, it would have become annoying. I complain when it's cold and I complain when it's hot...don't know what's up with that!!
Give me daydreaming in a sunny spot any day but heights without hand rails and a solid floor is a nightmare for me too.
The Florence hand embroidery was a great find*!*
Your place looks so warm and cozy! Makes me want to come over for a cup of tea and a lesson in textiles. Love love!
